I awoke to the sound of sirens coming down the road. Then I could hear shouting. Kris and I had fallen asleep on the couch watching a documentary on the history of Halloween. It had been Kris' idea. My startled awakening and immediate standing to look out the front windows woke her too.

"What's going on?" She asked as a fire truck rolled down the road. In summer you cannot see the road from the house, but with the leaves falling I can see through the dense forest to the road. My eyes follow the fire truck down the road. That's when I see it.

The bright orange flames rising from the neighbors house. They are many acres away and…

I run back to the house, noticing the use of magic didn't expel too much energy from me. The fear of what is to come must be fueling me. I stand on the root above the small green door a call out into the forest. A chattering chime echoed out of my mouth. Some leaves started to shuffle in the distance. I watch as a few of the other fae from other elements start to walk and make their way towards the entrance tree. Once they make it to me they are also winded. While I unpack a few things in the bedroom, Kris heads to the kitchen to make us all some brunch. Waylan has opened the toy chest in the living room and is playing with all the toys left over from my brothers and my younger years. Mom had saved as many toys as she could for her future grandchildren.

I looked around at my old room. All the furniture had stayed the same, it had just been rearranged to be a guest room. I lifted up the rug that covered most of the floor,…

They carry luggage. I grumble and start to pace. They intend on staying? No, no this is not good. Not good at all. I make my way back to the door, open it and walk through to the outside back through the green door. I can get a closer look now. Little human have not a blindness to the veil, they can, and have seen us before. However this can be used to our advantage. I quickly run further into the tall, browning grass. I step onto a fallen leaf and hold onto both sides with a wide stance. I close my eyes and concentrate. Leaves all around me start to tremble and make a crackling sound. With effort the…

Waylan began to wake in his booster. I came around the car to catch him before he started to cry for fear of being alone.

"Hey, I'm here. How was your nap?" I said soothingly.

"Good." He mumbled, not at all convincing that his nap was as restful as it had been. He wiped the sleep from his eyes and looked around. "Are we at Grammy's house?" He asked quietly. I nodded. "But Grammy isn't here anymore?" He asked even quieter.

"Grammy isn't here anymore." I said. He nodded in understanding as I unbuckled his seat belt. "Did you have any cool dreams on the car ride?"I asked, trying to lighten the mood.

"I dreamed about tiny people with wings…
